Quick answer: In our Cape Town stock on 26 October 2026, a natural diamond (stone only, VAT included) had a median price of about R6,250 at 0.5ct, R13,650 at 0.7ct and R45,800 at 1ct. Add about R16,000 for a platinum setting, R14,200 for 18ct, R10,500 for 14ct or R7,000 for 9ct, so a typical 1ct ring comes to roughly R52,800–R61,800. Colour, clarity, cut, shape and the grading lab move the price more than the size alone.

“How much should I spend?” is the question I’m asked most, usually a little nervously. My honest answer is below, and it isn’t a formula. What helps is seeing real numbers. So instead of guessing, we pulled the prices of every natural diamond on our loose diamonds page, 186 stones, on 26 October 2026. Here’s what they say.

Is there a rule for how much to spend on an engagement ring?

No. There’s no salary rule. Spend what feels comfortable, and not a rand more. You’ll have heard the one about months of wages. Honestly, I think it’s crazy. An engagement ring should be the start of something happy, not a debt you’re still paying off at your first anniversary.

That’s why we push for fair pricing and good value. We cut our own diamonds, and our partner workshop in Cape Town makes the rings, so you pay factory-direct prices without the extra layers in between. Our job is to make your budget go further, so you don’t have to strain yourself to get a ring you love.

If you want the most diamond for your money, ask me about the value stone: a 1ct fancy shape in J–M colour, SI1–SI2 clarity, that’s eye-clean. We check every one with you at the counter, so you see it with your own eyes before you decide. And if it helps, you can pay a deposit and the balance on completion, with up to 3 months allowed. We don’t do lay-by.

Tell me what you’re comfortable spending, and I’ll show you the best ring it buys. No pressure, no judgement.

How much does a natural diamond cost in South Africa?

For a 1ct natural diamond in our stock, the median was about R45,800, stone only, VAT included. A 0.5ct was about R6,250 and a 0.7ct about R13,650.

These are loose-stone prices from our own stock on 26 October 2026. The setting is extra. Each range is wide because one size can hold very different stones, from a soft-coloured stone with visible inclusions to a bright, near-flawless one.

Centre stone Stone median (VAT incl.) Range in our stock Ring total with platinum setting Ring total with 18ct setting
~0.5ct (12 stones) R6,250 R3,200 – R14,900 about R22,250 about R20,450
~0.7ct (12 stones) R13,650 R3,800 – R31,600 about R29,650 about R27,850
~1ct (29 stones) R45,800 R16,400 – R90,100 about R61,800 about R60,000

Ring totals are the stone median plus our current setting estimate (platinum about R16,000, 18ct about R14,200). Final setting price depends on the design. Bands: 0.45–0.55ct, 0.65–0.75ct and 0.95–1.10ct. Stock changes daily, so see the loose diamonds page for today’s stones.

What about the setting?

Right now platinum is the dearest setting, and 18ct gold comes in a little below it. Gold has risen so much that the gap is only about R1,800. So choose the metal you love, not the one you think is cheaper.

These are our current setting estimates for a centre stone of 0.5ct to 1ct, VAT included. The final price depends on the design.

Metal Setting estimate
Platinum (PT950) about R16,000
18ct gold about R14,200
14ct gold about R10,500
9ct gold about R7,000

If the budget is tight, 9ct gold keeps the ring affordable and lets more of your money go into the diamond. 14ct is a good middle ground.

What moves the price of a diamond?

Carat, colour, clarity, cut, shape and the grading lab. Two stones of the same weight can differ in price several times over.

  • Carat. Price climbs steeply as you approach 1ct. That’s why our 1ct median is more than three times the 0.7ct median.
  • Colour. D is colourless. As you move towards J, K, L and M, a stone gets warmer and the price drops sharply.
  • Clarity. VVS and VS stones carry a premium. SI stones cost much less, and many are eye-clean, which means you can’t see the inclusion with the naked eye.
  • Cut and shape. Rounds usually cost more per carat than fancy shapes like oval, cushion, emerald and pear. In our 1ct band the round median was R40,350 and the fancy median R46,200. The fancies included some higher-grade stones, which shows that grade matters more than shape alone.
  • Certificate. Our stock is GIA & EGL certified. A report from a respected lab tells you exactly what you’re paying for. I explain the labs in our guide to diamond certificates in South Africa.

Is the market moving?

Supply is tightening, so don’t bank on prices dropping. Mine closures are happening across the industry. De Beers says its Venetia mine in Limpopo is ramping down ahead of a planned production pause (De Beers Q3 2026 report). I’m not telling you to buy a diamond as an investment. I’m saying natural diamonds are finite, and fewer are coming out of the ground.

My sweet spot: where your budget goes furthest

A 1ct fancy shape in J to M colour, SI1–SI2 clarity, that’s eye-clean. This is the stone I steer people towards most.

In a fancy shape, these warmer colours face up white once they’re set, and an eye-clean SI looks clean on the hand. You get a full carat and great value without going lab-grown. And it’s a natural stone that’s worth something one day, unlike lab-grown, which resells for nothing.

When we pulled our stock, three stones fitted that brief, ranging from R18,500 to R44,300: a 1.06ct M SI1 emerald cut, a 1.02ct L SI2 cushion and a 1.00ct J SI1 oval, all GIA certified. Compare that with the R45,800 median for 1ct. Even in platinum, that’s a full-carat natural ring from about R34,500. Not every SI is eye-clean, so every SI stone is checked with you at the counter for eye-clean. SI stones that aren’t eye-clean carry substantially bigger discounts.

If you’d still like to see lab-grown, we don’t stock lab-grown, but we’ll source it for you at great pricing. Our 1-carat lab-grown vs natural price guide sets out the difference honestly.

How can I pay for an engagement ring?

We don’t do lay-by. You pay a deposit, and the balance on completion, with up to 3 months allowed. That gives you time to spread the cost while we make the ring.

Some clients also put old gold towards the ring. We buy gold based on the live gold price on the day, and we show you how we got to the number at the counter.

If you’re planning a December proposal, place custom orders by 20 November for completion before our holiday close. We take orders up to 22 December for completion in the new year. See our December proposal timeline.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I spend on an engagement ring in South Africa?

Whatever feels comfortable. There’s no rule, and you shouldn’t strain yourself. We keep pricing fair and factory-direct so your budget goes further. In our stock on 26 October 2026, natural stones ran from about R6,250 (0.5ct median) to R45,800 (1ct median), VAT included. With a platinum or 18ct setting, that’s roughly R20,450 to R61,800 for the ring.

How much is a 1 carat natural diamond in South Africa?

Our 1ct stones (0.95–1.10ct) ranged from R16,400 to R90,100, with a median of about R45,800, stone only and VAT included, on 26 October 2026.

Is 18ct gold or platinum cheaper for a setting?

18ct is a little cheaper right now, though the gap has narrowed because the gold price has risen so much. Our estimates are about R16,000 for platinum and R14,200 for 18ct. 14ct is about R10,500 and 9ct about R7,000.

What diamond gives the best value?

In my view, a 1ct fancy shape in J–M colour and SI1–SI2 clarity that’s eye-clean. It faces up white and keeps its value as a natural stone.

Do you offer lay-by or payment plans?

No lay-by. You pay a deposit, and the balance on completion, with up to 3 months allowed.

Do you sell lab-grown diamonds?

We don’t stock lab-grown, but we’ll source it for you at great pricing.
