Quick answer:

Planning a December proposal in Cape Town? Order a custom engagement ring by mid-November to be safe, because a custom ring typically takes 4–6 weeks and our workshop closes on 15 December. Late? Choose a natural engagement ring from our showroom, have a loose GIA or EGL certified diamond set in a mounting, or propose with the stone first.

How long does a custom engagement ring take in Cape Town?

Direct answer: A custom engagement ring at The Diamond Shoppe typically takes 4–6 weeks, and that stretches as December gets closer. Our workshop closes on 15 December, so for a December proposal, place your custom order by mid-November to be safe. After that, choose from our natural showroom stock or propose with a loose stone.

Your December proposal calendar

– Now to early November: the comfortable window for a fully custom ring, with time to choose the diamond and approve the design.
– Mid-November to be safe: the last custom orders for December. We don’t rush completely new custom work; good jewellery shouldn’t be hurried.
– Before 15 December: choose a showroom ring, or a loose stone in one of our mountings. In-house rings can be resized on a rush basis right up until our workshop closes on 15 December.

Route A: natural engagement rings in our Cape Town showroom

Our private showroom on the 15th floor of Standard Bank South Towers on the Foreshore has plenty of beautiful natural diamond engagement rings to see in person. We also keep mountings: choose one of our loose natural diamonds and we’ll mount it for you.

Every diamond we sell is GIA or EGL certified. If you’re unsure what a lab report tells you, read our guide to GIA vs IGI certificates in South Africa.

Route B: custom, with more than fifty years of Cross family craft

Custom is where more than fifty years of Cross family craft shows. You choose the stone, we design the ring around it, and our factory makes it. Allow 4–6 weeks, longer as the year-end rush builds, which is why mid-November is the safe cut-off.

Is it too late to get an engagement ring for December?

Direct answer: No. Even after the mid-November custom cut-off, you can choose a finished natural engagement ring or a loose stone and mounting from our Cape Town showroom before our workshop closes on 15 December. You can also propose with a loose certified diamond and design the ring together afterwards. In-house rings can be rush-resized until 15 December.

Propose with the stone first. Many clients do, and we welcome it. She gets a say in the setting, and you keep your date.

How do I get her ring size without her knowing?

Direct answer: Borrow a ring she wears on her ring finger and compare it with our finger size guide, or ask a close friend or family member to help quietly. If the size isn’t quite right after the proposal, don’t worry: you get one free resizing, so getting close is good enough to start.

Our guide to measuring her finger size covers the quiet ways to do it.

How much does a natural diamond engagement ring cost in South Africa?

Direct answer: At The Diamond Shoppe, a 1ct natural diamond engagement ring starts from about R45,000, and plenty of our rings are under R100,000. Loose 1ct natural diamonds start from about R16,000 depending on grade, with better-looking stones from about R30,000. Prices follow our live stock, so they move.
